Highlights

  • Szczecin is considered the historical capital of Western Pomerania. The pride of the city are Wały Chrobrego (King Chrobry’s Embankments, an observation deck built on a slope), the Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle, and the Cathedral Basilica of St. James the Apostle.
  • Szczecin is located 65 km away from the Baltic Sea.
  • Lake Dąbie is located entirely within the limits of the city. It is the fourth largest Polish lake and covers 18% of the area of the city. At the lake, there are many swimming pools and yacht marinas used in summer.
  • The Underground Tourist Route in Szczecin is a reconstruction of the largest civilian air raid shelter from World War II and the fallout shelter from the period of the Cold War. It is supposed that, at the construction of the shelter, old halls were used dating probably from the late 19th century. Until the early 1990s, Civil Defence training took place in those constructions.
  • The Pomeranian Dukes’ Castle has in its collection a seventeenth-century map of the Great Duchy of Pomerania, which is the fruit of six years of work of Eilhardus Lubinus. To create the map, Lubinus toured the entire Pomerania and made thousands of measurements to ensure that the map was very precise.
  • The city is surrounded three forests: Wkrzańska Forest from the north, Bukowa Forest from the south, and Goleniowska Forest from the east.
  • Within the borders of Szczecin, there is over 40 km of bicycle paths.
  • Szczecin Aero Club runs classes and training courses in aircraft flying, gliding, parachuting, and paragliding.
  • Szczecin is located on the Route of Brick Gothic, which stretches across seven European countries. In Poland, the route includes eight cities: Szczecin, Chełno, Gdansk, Olsztyn, Sławno, Toruń, Płock and Stargard Szczeciński.
  • In Experimentarium Eureka, you can take part in interactive exhibitions and discover the basic principles of physics. The attractions include the solar globe, endless tunnel, and huge soap bubbles.
