Highlights

  • The name of the city of Radom probably derives from the name of Radomir or the tribe of Radomierzanie, who inhabited the surrounding lands.
  • Radom’s Old Town has numerous monuments, including the Neo-Gothic Town Hall and Piarist College. In the city, there used to be a royal palace. It was built in the 14th thanks to the efforts of Casimir III the Great. However, only some elements of the castle are preserved until this day, namely the ground floor and the basement of the part called ‘Dom Wielki’ (Great House).
Radom is known for the Air Shows, which are organised every two years.
  • In 1383, during a Sejm held in Radom, the Polish nobility elected Jadwiga, the daughter of Louis of Hungary, as the ‘king’ of Poland.
  • The buildings of the former power station serve today as the seat of the Masovian Centre for Contemporary Art “Elektrownia” in Radom.
  • In the Museum of the Radom Village, you can see more than 60 monuments of folk architecture. These include, among others, manor houses, windmills, or a wooden bell tower built without nails. While visiting the museum, it is worth to see carriages and carts used in the past.
  • Foundation of Radom is associated with a legend about a hunter who came from a distant land. The young man, unsuccessfully looking for animals in the woods, met an enchanted eagle. The bird promised to take him to a land where he could hunt freely. Unfortunately, having reached this place, it turned out that the inhabitants of the land fell into eternal sleep as a punishment for their possessiveness. They could be released from the enchantment by a person who would know how to read the spell encrypted in the singing of birds, the sound of the trees and the murmuring of the stream. The young man wandered for several days in the woods, longing for his home, and out of this feeling, he uttered the magic words: “Rad dom tutaj bym znalazł” (“I would be happy if I found my home here”), which broke the spell over the sleeping people. And thus Radom was created!
